Fergus McKay and his troupe, Nothing Concrete, are music like nothing you have never heard before from their remote location of Pyrenees in the South of France. With diversity in both their music and backgrounds, Fergus McKay & Nothing Concrete are an extraordinary band consisting of unique and talented musicians who create folk infused, bluesy, 30s jazz swing music with tap dancing solos to top it all off. Among their ranks are a Scot, an Italian, a Frenchman and a Jewish percussionist all shunning convention and making diversity one of their pillars. The shunning of convention and diversity translates into their music by being difficult to pin down to one specific genre or even time era! Just listen to their brand new single, ‘Old Black Crow’, if you don’t believe me.

‘Old Black Crow’ was originally written about ten years ago when Fergus was busking all over Europe and is an accumulation of all the lives he soaked up during his travels. Akin to The Decemberists, Fergus McKay & Nothing Concrete use their music as a form of story-telling, the lyrics crafted to draw you in and keep you hooked. The story of ‘Old Black Crow’ is one of group of renegades on the run as is shown by the highwaymen masks the band are seen wearing in the music video, as well as the video being cut up with scenes from Georges Méliés’ 1906 film, A Desperate Crime. The vintage looking wagon the music video takes place in is in fact a converted double decker bus, proving the band to be crafty in more than just their music. Furthering this point is how the three female members of the band (Gaia, Saskia and Angie) all balance their careers with raising their children, hoping to inspire others to an alternative way of living. Whilst the sound of ‘Old Black Crow’ reflects a lifestyle of shunning technology and producing organic sound in a similar bohemian fashion to Dexy’s Midnight Runners, Fergus & Nothing Concrete have still managed to create something relevant and utterly addictive.
Fergus McKay & Nothing Concrete are a band wanting to inspire those who may not feel completely at peace with the technologically controlled world we live in and hope their music can prove to be a tranquil escape for these like-minded folks.
